Elements and Performance Criteria

  1. Identify safety features of road network and traffic control devices
  2. Identify significance of safety features of road networks and traffic control devices
  3. Determine environmental factors that contribute to road harm

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

identifying active and passive road network features

identifying significance of traffic control devices and their meaning

reading, interpreting and following instructions, procedures and information

using basic interpersonal and communication skills (including listening, questioning, receiving feedback).


Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

active road network safety features including:

audible run-off road strip

electronic lane advice

electronic speed signs

guide posts

lane markings

radio announcements

road surface

roundabouts

traffic lights

environmental factors including:

rain

snow

ice

water on road

dust

sand

mud

rocks

high risk behaviour factors including:

alcohol

distraction

drugs

fatigue

hoon behaviour

inattention

speed (high speed or inappropriate for circumstances)

road users including:

cyclists and skaters

farm vehicles

heavy commercial vehicles

mobility scooters

other drivers

passengers

pedestrians

segways

passive road network safety features including:

breakaway poles

culvert (1 metre sealed)

decoy road work vehicles

frangible poles

safety rails/barriers

separated dual carriage lanes

water barriers

potential consequences of not adhering to road networks and traffic control devices including:

economic impact

emotional reaction

financial effect

legal repercussions

physical injury

social repercussions

risk factors and how they affect performance

relevant Australian Road Rules and legislation

relevant state/territory roads and traffic authorities.
